  Carcinoma of Esophagus

Patient:
Mr. Hong, male, 49 years old. Inpatient No.: 034529

Background:
2 years ago, the patient repeatedly had upper abdominal gas pains along with vomiting. CT scan showed: Lower esophageal malignant tumor. Gastroscopy showed: Lower esophageal neoplasm. Pathological indication: Moderately differentiated squamous carcinoma. Immediately the patient received "Radical Resection of Esophageal Cancer " under general anesthesia. Operation and pathology confirmed: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, the infiltration muscle layer was deep into placenta percreta, no infiltration on the upper and lower incisal edges; no lymph node metastasis. One and a half years after the operation, the patient was getting thinner, his weight was 49kg; he had medium anemia but no enlarged superficial lymph nodes. Sounds from his heart and lungs were normal; flat abdomen, no tenderness, liver and spleen were not palpable. Petechia was found on his left abdomen and waist. Karnofsky score was 70.

Diagnosis:
Relapse after esophagectomy.

Integrative Treatment:
The patient suffered from a relapse after esophagectomy, his general condition was bad, Karnofsky score was 70. He complained of nausea and vomiting; loss of weight; he had dysphagia due to esophageal blockage after tumor relapse; combined with the delibitation due to cancer, he was diagnosed as severe dystrophia. Upon admission, he was immediately given nutritional support. He received total parenteral nutrition and herbal medicine for nursing the stomach and spleen. As for anti-cancer aspect, he received radiofrequency local hyperthermia on the tumor projection area; detoxification was performed once every other day; intravenous ozonated saline was interchangeably used with hyperthermia and detoxification once every other day. One week later, symptoms of nausea and vomiting were relieved. Chinese medicine prescription was adjusted accordingly. The patient still had low speech voice, depressed mood, pale face, thin and white coated tongue with small and weak pulse. The differentiation diagnosis indicated deficiency of both Qi and blood. Energy supporting decoction was offered to the patient once a day, for 90 days; simultaneously, the dosage of detoxification was increased, given to the patient 3 times a week for 6 weeks; 2 weeks after receiving ozonated saline IV, the patient gained in weight to 52kg. Blood test: RBC 3.5*1012/L, Hb105g/L, WBC 4.7*109/. Ozonated saline IV was replaced by EBOO, for 18 treatments. Wholebody hyperthermia was added, it was given once every 2 weeks, for 4 treatments; Radiofrequency local hyperthermia was given 3 times every week, on alternate days for 27 treatments. Detoxification and hyperthermia were arranged within the same schedule. During hospitalization, the patient practised Qigong every day and Taiji every morning after he gained energy. He learned to relax and improved his mental state. He gained confidence in the treatments. 3 months later, he had a gastroscopy re-examination: Slight flare of the stoma, the ulcer lesion was decreased. After discharge, the patient kept doing weekly treatments of radiofrequency local hyperthermia, EBOO and detoxification, and took herbal medicine and herbal cuisine.

Curative Effect:
The patient was treated with non-toxic integrative therapies for 3 months, the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, emaciation and anemia were relieved. Treatments were differentiated when treating primary and secondary issues. In the beginning, the main treatments were to correct dystrophia and relieve the symptoms. Later the treatments were to improve the physical condition, strengthen healthy qi and eliminate pathogens. Different therapies achieving the same goal. After active treatments, the patient improved his mental state and gained 9 kg. He had a normal appetite and slept well. His anemia was corrected. Karnofsky score was 100. To consolidate the effectiveness of the treatments, to prevent relapse and metastasis, and also to improve his immune system, the patient kept performing a one week integrative treatments once every month and he took long-term herbal medicines. He also practised Qigong and did proper exercises. He ate herbal cuisine according to doctor's advice to improve his nutrition status in order to maintain the good effects of the treatments.
